9-Day Novena in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes, begins Feb. 2, 2023, at St. Benedict Church.  February 11 is the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, when Mary appeared to 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous on that date in 1858 in Lourdes, France. (See Schedule)

What is a Novena?

A 9-day novena is a prayer, or set of prayers, often prayed for special intentions or petitions.  Novenas may be prayed at any time, but particularly nine days before the feast days of specific saints or solemnities of the Church, such as Christmas and Pentecost.  (Novena is derived from the Latin novem, meaning nine.) The nine days between the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost when the disciples gathered in the upper room and devoted themselves to prayer, is often considered to be the first novena.

Why should we pray novenas?  Jesus Christ calls us to pray. He tells us to “pray always without losing heart” (Lk 18:1), to pray with persistence. As we pray novenas, we are praising, preparing, waiting and trusting.
